One of the main conditions of comfortable living is internal temperature of rooms. In climate conditions in Slovakia is nessecary to heat or tempere rooms most time of the year to get comfotable parametres of microclime. Duration of heating period depends on position of town, altitude, location which is the object built in. Heating duration is more than 200 days.
Therefore is nessecary to place in particular rooms (besides some very specific rooms) heating objects or use different heating system. Thermal performance of heating objects shoud be at least similar or little bit higher then thermal losses of rooms. This problem solves planner of heating, in new or planned house unquestioningly in co-operation with architect.
In the case of kitchen is this task tougher because of different reasons:
- direct connection of kitchen and other rooms (dining room, living room, comunication rooms)
- placement of kitchen equipment around the room including cool outer walls and very often under the windows
- increased production and presence of humidity in the room and danger of mildew on the walls
Therefore is important to take it into consideration while planning individual section and be in touch with designer of construction and designer of heating.
The way of heating
Mostly is used one of the most used types of heating objects - radiators. They are steel-wooden, cast-iron, phalangeal, aluminous phalangeal or atypical heating objects specially designed for particular room. Used are also floor convector heaters, systems of floor heating, wall heating or hot-air heating (often used with heat from fireplace), or combination of all.
Radiators
Ideal placement for radiator is nearby outer wall, under the window, beacause flowing of air is helping with the heating of room - cool air fall down to radiator. Ledge shouldn’t exceed over the radiator. Simultaneously is appropriate to have no solid obstacles, furniture etc. In that case heating performance falls and there can be a shortage of heat supplied into room against heating losses. That is sometimes in conflict with arranging kitchen with furniture placed near outer wall or under the window.
When this situation comes (in case of absence of any other free place in kitchen) is appropriate:
- Keep the space in front of radiator (just working board or shelves for kitchen equipment or dry food and fix lattice between ledge and its working board, so cool air can fall down to heating object)
- In case of cabinet with door, built the cabinet with smaller depth and behind the cabinet place flat steel radiator of minimal depth.
- In every case think about the lattice in working board and plinth lath - all over the radiator
- The parts in corners of room, which are cooled from outer (or just unheated) space are mostly endangered of mildew. It is nessecary to claim designer of heating to consider danger of mildew on the inner side of walls and solve it with adequate heat isolation.
Floor Heating
This is very favoured way of heating, mostly in houses. You can ask architects, designers of heating, manufacturers or just find on web pages advantages (economical, hygienic..) of this way. From hygienic reasons can not be the temperature of water in the heating system (and floor as well) the specific highest temperature. So the heating performance of 1 m2 of floor is limited. And that is the reason why heating performance depends on free space for registers (”snakes”) of floor heating.
It is nessecary to colaborate with heating designer when the interior is beeing ordered or planned.
Placing floor heating registers under kitchen cabinets standing right on the floor doesn’t have any meaning. In that case will heating designer use just free space in kitchen. This apply also to the other rooms in full case (bedrooms, bathrooms..). You can demand from heating designer to use space along outer wall and behind kitchen cabinets use for heating connections to particulat heating sectors of kitchen or other rooms. These connections will help to tempere the space between the outer walls and rear walls of kitchen cabinets.
If you need higher heating performance, you can use the heating space under the cabinets which whou be designed and made with base 100mm high. Then places under the cabinets help to heat the kitchen.
Wall heating
It’s a system of matting from small plastic tubes, which are placed under the plaster and surface of these walls makes low-temperatured heating. It is appropriate to use them on places, where can not be set radiators, or the outer wall has to be protected against dew or just aplicate them in specific cases of architectonical solutions of interior (kitchens, bathrooms, stairs or other rooms).
Convector heater
Floor convectors are fundamentally placed in front of glassed places reaching the floor and their position doesn’t mean collison with kitchen equipment. Mostly it is a space in front of glassed places, french windows and door heading to teracce, garden or loggia. Bench convectors are designed mostly to specific places, where is no chance to reduction of their function with furniture or any other equipment.
Preparation of the kitchen should be coordinated with the plan of heating system, not in reverse.
